DARLINGTON - In honor of National EMS Appreciation Week, the members of Rural Medical Ambulance Service will be hosting an open house and picnic from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at RMAS' headquarters, 127 E. Louisa St., Darlington.
The goal of the event is to raise funds for equipment and training.
The meal provided at the open house will consist of shredded beef sandwiches, brats, hot dogs, salads, fruit, desert, beverage and much more. There is no cost for the meal but donations will be accepted.
This year's open house will include demonstrations of the squad's new automated chest compression devices. These devices ensure patients receive effective chest compressions without interruption during CPR, which guarantees a sudden cardiac arrest patient their only chance for survival. Furthermore, since the machine is doing the work of chest compressions, the rescuers' hands are free to provide other lifesaving interventions. These devices, valued at $30,000, were purchased with funds from last year's open house, a fundraiser mailing and a generous contribution from the Darlington Development Corporation.
RMAS is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) charitable organization that currently operates two ambulances and responds to the emergent health care needs of citizens in Lafayette County.
