MONROE - The Monroe Arts Center presents legendary folk singer, musician and performer, Bill Staines in concert for one show only at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 15.
For more than 40 years, Staines has traveled back and forth across North America, performing nearly 200 concerts a year. Along with his songs, his baritone voice, and his prowess on the guitar, Staines blends his gentle wit and humor into his performances immediately creating a genuine rapport with his audience. His songs have been recorded by many artists including Peter, Paul, and Mary, Tommy Makem and Liam Clancy, The Highwaymen, Mason Williams, Grandpa Jones, Jerry Jeff Walker, Nanci Griffith, Glen Yarborough, and others.
Staines has recorded 26 solo albums, including his 2007 Red House release, "Old Dogs." Many of Staines' songs have appeared in grade school music books, church hymnals, and scouting campfire songbooks; he is one of only a few songwriters to have eight songs published in the classic song collection, "Rise up Singing."
His radio and television appearances have included "A Prairie Home Companion," "Mountain Stage," "The Good Evening Show," and he has hosted local programs on PBS and network television. Over the decades, he's sang on Garrison Keillor's "A Prairie Home Companion," HBO's award winning series "Deadwood," and Public Radio' "Mountain Stage." Additionally, his music has been used in a number of films including "Off and Running," with Cyndi Lauper, and "The Return of the Secaucus Seven."
In 1975 he won the National Yodeling Championship at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Kerrville, Texas, and he has become a perennial instructor of yodeling workshops. He has also received The Jerry Christen Award, recognizing his contribution to New England folk music.
