MONROE - The Monroe City Band will perform the first of five free concerts at 7:30 p.m. Monday in Twining Park's band shell.
The band will begin its 66th season with a concert titled, "Space, The Final Frontier," which features selections relating to space and space exploration.
Included in the evening's selections will be "Star Wars, The Marches"; a suite from Holst's famous "The Planets"; music from "Star Trek: Out Of Darkness"; and other similarly-themed numbers. Host and emcee for the evening will be David Busker.
There is no admission charge, and attendees may find seats at the band shell or bring their own lawn chairs or blankets.
The 55-piece band is made up of residents of Monroe and surrounding communities, and began rehearsing in mid-April to prepare for the park season.
Randy Schneeberger is the conductor. Currently, there are two "charter members" in the Monroe City Band, Frances Wells and Rosie Wenger.
The remaining concerts will be held on June 22, July 4 at 8:09 p.m., July 13 and July 27.
