MONROE - Several Monroe Terrace residents were evacuated just before 2 p.m. Wednesday when one of them found her apartment filled with smoke after returning home. The apartment is on the ground floor of the apartments at 306 Fourth Street.

A friend with the woman saw the smoke in the apartment and refused to go in.

Keith Streit, who lives one floor below, said the friend came to his door asking for a phone to call the fire department.

Jennifer Stiner, who lives on the second floor, said she heard the fire alarm and quickly got her daughter and herself out.

The resident told her friend she had put the fire out, but firefighters had to ventilate the home and verify the fire was extinguished.

Green County EMS arrived on the scene to check the residents. The resident of the apartment where the fire had started refused medical transport.

Monroe Fire Chief Daryl Rausch said the fire was caused by smoking materials.
