MONROE - The candidate to become Monroe Wastewater Treatment Plant supervisor has several years experience, according to Monroe City Clerk Carol Stamm.

George Thompson, Verona, is an engineer at Town and County Engineering, Madison. He has also been a project engineer at RMT in Madison, where he consulted clients to meet environmental operations and compliance needs. Thompson also served as waste treatment superintendent of Wausau Paper in Brokaw.

Thompson is a licensed engineer and has a degree in environmental engineering from Michigan Technical University. He is certified by the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources for wastewater operations, Stamm said.

The Monroe Salary and Personnel Committee Tuesday unanimously recommended that Thompson fill the position as supervisor.

The committee's recommendation will be voted on at the May 18 city council meeting.

If Thompson is approved by the council, he will replace Jerry Ellefson, who retired as supervisor Dec. 27 after 40 years with the department.

Thompson will report to Monroe Director of Public Works Kelly Finkenbinder. In December, the council placed the department, along with the city's other utility and public works departments, under Finkenbinder's supervision.
