NEW GLARUS - A portion of County H between Disch Road and Zentner Road was closed Wednesday after a fertilizer tank overturned and spilled liquid fertilizer.

The Sheriff's Department was notified of a farm implement accident at about 11:30 a.m. on County H about three miles southwest of New Glarus. The accident caused a chemical spill from a farm tank and liquid was flowing down the road, Green County Sheriff Randy Roderick said in a statement.

The road opened at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, while additional cleaning will be done today.

Deputies, along with the New Glarus Police Department and the Wisconsin State patrol responded to the scene. The New Glarus Fire Department was called as a precautionary measure. The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Green County Emergency Management and the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture were also called to the scene, Roderick said.

Preliminary investigation indicated a farm tractor was pulling a fertilizer applicator and behind the applicator was a fertilizer tank. The hitch to the fertilizer tank broke and the tank overturned spilling 950 gallons of fertilizer, Roderick said.

The Green County Highway Department assisted in the cleaning of the site.
