Following the second public death of an American citizen at the hands of federal U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro last Saturday, Jan. 24, rallies and demonstrations spread across the nation in protest. Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother from Minneapolis, and Alex Pretti, also 37 and a Veterans Affairs ICU nurse originally from Green Bay were shot dead by ICE agents on public streets in front of crowds of onlookers. In Monroe, more than 160 people walked around the Green County Courthouse despite wind chill temperatures 15 degrees below zero. Students at Monroe High School organized their own first amendment right to peacefully assemble in protest with a walkout on Friday, Jan. 30. The district informed parents it had become aware of the walk-out, but was not involved. District Administrator Joe Monroe told parents in an email that police officers will be on scene for safety reasons. Monroe also said that the district respects the student’s desire to exercise their constitutional rights, however, any student participating would be marked with an unexcused absence from class.
