Green County Fair Board

The 2011 Green County Fair, July 20-24, is fast approaching. The shows and the carnival are booked, vendors are reserving space to sell their wares, and the grounds are being groomed for the summer's activities. Online tickets for the tractor pull, the John Michael Montgomery concert and the demolition derbies are currently on sale at www.greencountyfair.net and will remain so through the fair.

A one-day only, pre-fair, cash only, sale will be held at the fairgrounds, May 14 from 9 a.m. to noon. Tickets will also be sold at the fairgrounds all during the week of the fair.

For those of you who wish to exhibit in the open class, Green County Fair books will be available soon at local banks and at the fairgrounds. This same entry information is available at www.greencountyfair.net. If you enjoy a little friendly competition with your friends and neighbors, this is your opportunity. Entries can be made in dairy, cheese, flowers and house plants, woodworking, natural science, clothing, home furnishings, cultural arts and photography.

The Green County Fair lasts only five days; did you ever wonder what happens at the fairgrounds the other 51 weeks of the year? A lot of fairs in Wisconsin are totally funded by county tax dollars, but as a stockholder-owned fair, this is not true of the Green County Fair. We must generate our own funds to finance the fair and maintain the fairgrounds. We are fortunate to receive a county board donation, donations to our sponsorship program by a number of local businesses and Friend of Fair donations.

To further raise needed funds, the fairgrounds itself is used to generate income. From May 1 through Oct. 1, except for fair week, the fairgrounds turns into a licensed campground. We offer 100 campsites ($20 per night), both with and without electrical hook-ups and a dumping station. Tent camping sites ($12 per night) are also available.

This summer, the grounds will be used by a number of groups and individuals. Included in this list are the regional hereford show, Green County Dairy Day cattle show, the balloon rally, two goat shows, hog show, Cub Scout day camp, some fire school activities and a number of 4-H training activities and meetings. You can rent one building and even the entire fairgrounds, depending on your needs. We have several private dates booked this year for wedding receptions and reunions. As an example, you can rent Exhibition Hall for $300, plus a trash fee. You can decorate as you like and provide whatever food and beverages you want and not be required to use a specific food service. Lots of space for parking is also provided.

Every other year, Cheese Days assembles their parade here. We have also had breed shows, association fundraising meals, tractor pulls, gun shows and auctions.

As fall rolls around, we look toward providing space for winter storage. Each Saturday in October, storage is accepted for campers, boats, jet skiis, cars, tractors and incidentals.
