MONROE - Three Monroe churches will host school-aged piano students who are interested in learning about and having an opportunity to play the organ from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19.

The Madison-based Association of Church Musicians and the Madison Chapter of the American Guild of Organists are sponsoring the event "Pedals, Pipes and Pizza - Swiss Style," where piano students will learn how pipe organs are built, how they work, ways in which they are used, and then see, hear and play three different pipe organs.

The event will start at 9 a.m. with a video titled "Pulling Out All the Stops," followed by students exploring and playing the 39-rank, three-manual Berghaus pipe organ at the United Methodist Church of Monroe, 2227 4th St. Following a pizza lunch at the historic Turner Hall of Monroe Ratskeller Restaurant, 1217 17th Ave., students will visit the 2006 Matthew Ronald Buholzer Memorial Organ, a three-manual hybrid Möller pipe/Rodgers electronic installation at St. Victor Catholic Church, 1760 14th St. The event will finish at St. John's United Church of Christ, 1724 14th St., with the historic 1923 Wangerin-Weickhardt organ. Linda Krueger and John Krueger, both of Madison, and Julie Shipe McClain and Deborah Krauss Smith, both Monroe organists, will be presenters for the hands-on event. All are members of ACM and AGO.

The free event is open to piano students ages 9 through 16, or grades 3 and up. Pre-registration is required by Saturday, Oct. 12. A registration form is available at www.madisonacm.org/pedalspipespizzafall2013.html or by contacting John Krueger at 608-249-0679 or j.krueger@att.net. Registered participants can bring a piece of piano music to play on each of the pipe organs that will be visited.
