MONROE - The Monroe Police Department wants people to be aware of the dangers of drinking and driving.

Each year, according to Capt. Jim Kosek, 42,000 people in Wisconsin are convicted of drunken driving.

"That's the same number of people as the population of Fond du Lac," he said.

The department will host a National Night Out activity Saturday to kick off its anti-drunken driving campaign, "Drunk Driving - Over the Limit, Under Arrest." Monroe is one of the departments in the area taking part in the national campaign.

The campaign begins Aug. 15 and continues through Labor Day.

The Green County Sheriff's Department also is taking part in the program.

Green County Chief Deputy Jeff Skatrud said the department will staff additional deputies to enforce traffic laws, specifically targeting drunken drivers.

"The goal of the nationwide campaign is to reduce traffic crashes, injuries and deaths," Skatrud said. "People are encouraged to take precautions."

Skatrud said people should choose a designated driver even before they begin to drink alcohol, be aware of the number of drinks they have before they get behind the wheel of a vehicle, and to not drive if they feel any effects of alcohol.

At its Saturday event, the Monroe Police Department will allow people to learn about drunken driving and the consequences.

Visitors can see a rollover simulator along with fatal vision goggles, which demonstrates what it's like to drive while drunk. People can even try a ride in a Simulated Impaired Driving Experience vehicle, Kosek said.

There will be refreshments, give-aways, drawings and displays.

The event is from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday in the Alpine Slicing and Cheese (the old Pick 'n Save) parking lot, 112 W. Eighth St.
