MONROE - A Monroe man who escaped from police custody a week ago was charged Tuesday with fifth-offense driving while intoxicated and escaping a criminal arrest.

Ryan Todd King, 32, was charged with a Class G felony count of fifth-offense driving while intoxicated, a Class H felony count of escaping criminal arrest, four misdemeanor counts of bail jumping and a misdemeanor count of failing to install an ignition interlock device.

King's charges stem from an incident May 26, when a truck rollover crash was reported on the N4000 block of County N, Town of Monroe. King was found at the scene, having apparently been ejected from the vehicle.

King reportedly told responding police officers that he appreciated their work and that they had always treated him "decently." However, King was found to have a blood alcohol content of .256 and was prohibited from drinking by his bonds in several prior cases, so he was arrested.

Before being taken to jail, however, King was sent to the Monroe Clinic for observation because of possible injuries sustained in the crash. During his observation, King reportedly escaped his room and the hospital while doctors and officers were occupied elsewhere.

King was found several hours later at his residence in the N5500 block of County N, Town of Monroe.

King's next court appearance will be a preliminary hearing on June 7. His maximum possible sentence is 14 years in prison.
