MONROE - The World Cheese Discovery Center board is scheduled to meet Thursday, Feb. 23 to release the results of an EPA investigation on a property in downtown Monroe, the proposed site of the new center.

The board's goal is to create a tourist attraction for the area, highlighting the variety of world-class cheeses produced in the state. The report will help the group to determine its next step in the venture.

The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources' Remediation and Redevelopment Program awarded environmental contractor services to the World Cheese Discovery Center group to determine the potential for environmental contamination at the former Monroe Cheese Corporation plant in Monroe. The oldest portion of the building was constructed in 1888, and the complex was originally used as a brewery, before being purchased by the Monroe Cheese Company. Operations there ended in 2005, and the property remains vacant. The group is hoping to purchase the property to be the home of a new attraction, calling it the World Cheese Discovery Center.

While there is no evidence of contamination, the age and use of the building indicated it was a possibility.

The services provided to the World Cheese Discovery Center are valued between $3,000 and $5,000, and are funded through $1 million in assessment money from the Wisconsin Plant Recovery Initiative.

The meeting is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at the Wisconsin Community Bank. The meeting is open to the public.
