Encouraging signs at Lafayette fair attendance gates

DARLINGTON - The attendance numbers at the 153rd Lafayette County Fair last week could be a good sign for the Green County Fair this week in Monroe.

It appears people want to stay closer to home, according to Lafayette County fair officials.

County fair board member Bill Moody said early numbers show attendance was higher than average. No official numbers were available, but he said it looked as if there were more people at the fair each day than last year.

There were two reasons for the higher numbers - people are staying closer to home, he said, and the cooler temperatures.

"Could we have had better weather?" he said.

Moody said he remembers past fairs that were incredibly hot.

"I remember one year it was over 100 degrees every day," he laughed.

This year's temperatures were cooler and people didn't have to worry about getting overheated. Neither did the animals.

The animals are always a big draw to any fair and having them at the fair all week long brings people out to see them.

The fair also featured a carnival that was well received, Moody added.

"People were happy with the rides," he said. "I didn't hear anyone complain about any of the rides."

The Lafayette County Fair also featured tractor pulls, live music, stock car races and a livestock and cheese auction.
