MONROE - The city now has a clearer line of succession in case an emergency is declared.
The Monroe Common Council on Tuesday approved an ordinance that clarifies continuity in the case of a citywide emergency.
One piece of the code creates the position of a director of emergency management. This person is appointed by the council for an indefinite term in order to act as coordinator for all activities during a time of a declared emergency within the city. Once an order of emergency is declared by either the governor, mayor or council, then the director makes decisions.
The ordinance also names a clear line of succession from the mayor downward. If the mayor is either killed, missing or in some way unable to perform the functions of the office, an interim successor will be named. The first choice for this position would be council president, followed by the council member with the most seniority.
