HOWARD LAKE, Minn. - Joel and Cheri Espe of Hawks Hill Elk Ranch, Monticello, recently won several national meat contest awards at the North American Elk Breeders Association Annual Convention and International Antler Competition in Kansas City, Mo., which took place this past August.

The annual event is three days of meetings, seminars, banquets and multiple contests including a national meat contest. Judges for the annual NAEBA meat contest are convention attendees who pick their favorite meat selection in each of four categories during the Saturday afternoon break. It's a favorite part of the convention for many participants.

The Espes' competed in two categories, Elk Snack Sticks and Elk Deli Meat, winning both of them. Their Elk Barbecue Snack Sticks also won the Best of Show Award.
