DARLINGTON - Nursing students from Edgewood College in Madison will be at the Lafayette County Fair, providing education and screenings on a variety of health-related topics through Saturday, conducting blood pressure screenings, bone density education and screening, shingles and pneumonia vaccinations and CPR education.
Mannequins will be available for hands-on demonstrations. The students will be available for blood pressure and bone density screenings at the Senior Fun Day Event Friday, under the big tent with the pie contest starting at noon and live music beginning at 1 p.m.
Eight Edgewood College senior nursing students, with nursing instructors Mary Knellwolf and Vicki Evenson, have been visiting Lafayette County on Wednesdays and Thursdays each week to learn the public health component of their nursing education.
The students have been meeting at the Lafayette County Health Department and learning about rural communities. Some of their activities have included instruction on communicable disease prevention and surveillance, interviewing county department heads, attending county meetings, touring Memorial Hospital, observing WIC clinics and conducting home nursing visits.
The students heard a presentation from Dr. Matt Solverson from Family Health of Lafayette County about his experiences as a primary healthcare provider in a rural county, and Lee Gill, registered nurse, provided the students with an overview of her experience as a public health nurse, including school nursing. The students also have been placing Zika virus surveillance traps throughout Lafayette County to assist the health department in collecting data for Wisconsin. The data collection is a weekly process and will continue throughout the summer.
The nursing students will graduate from the Henry J. Predolin School of Nursing Program on Edgewood College Campus Aug. 4 in Madison.
