Drivers cautioned about St. Patrick's Day

MONROE -St. Patrick's Day has become a dangerous night to be on the road, according to Monroe Police Department Captain Jim Kosek.

"In 2007, 44 percent of the 105 drivers and motorcyclists involved in fatal crashes (on St. Patrick's Day) had a blood alcohol count greater than the legal drinking limit of .08," he said.

The police department is working in conjunction with state and federal law enforcement to remind people to drink responsibly.

"Whether it's a few drinks with a few friends or green beer, if you plan on using alcohol, never drive while impaired and never let your friends drive if you think they are impaired," Kosek said.

Kosek suggested people plan for a safe way home before they start to celebrate; designate a sober driver; or call a friend or family member.

People should also contact the police if they see someone driving who they think is intoxicated.
