BRODHEAD - Gary Sutherland and the Green County Conservation League recently provided three new shotguns for Canyon Camp, the Boy Scouts of America camp near Apple River.
The guns were needed for scouts to earn merit badges in shotgun shooting.
The guns at Canyon Camp were getting old. One of the staff members at the camp brought his own shotgun for the scouts to use, said Tim Conway, Brodhead. Conway's son, Ben, is an Eagle Scout in Brodhead Boy Scout Troop 108 and has worked at Canyon Camp during the summer.
Canyon Camp, which has been a Boy Scout camp since 1936, offers six weeks of camping to Boy Scouts and Venture Scouts every summer.
Sutherland said that when he learned about the need for new shotguns at Canyon Camp, he decided to get the conservation league involved.
It was just the kind of thing the league does, Sutherland said.
Over the years, the conservation league has sent kids to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources camp, helped with the Friends of Cadiz Springs and donated money to help kids learn about conservation and the need to protect the environment.
Sutherland said the group, which is made up of about 120 people throughout the county, has helped kids become involved with the outdoors.
Sutherland presented the guns to Canyon Camp on behalf of the conservation league in July. Sutherland and the league were honored for the contribution July 14 at the camp.
