Districts discuss consolidation study

BELLEVILLE - School boards from Belleville, Monticello and New Glarus will discuss a study regarding the possibility of consolidating the three school districts, at a meeting tonight.

School boards from each district will meet at 7:30 p.m. in the Belleville High School auditorium.

The three districts received a grant from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) earlier this year to study the idea of consolidating some services to help the districts save money.

In December, the Wisconsin Department of Instruction sent information to all Wisconsin school districts offering a grant for those districts that want to study the idea of consolidating with other districts.

The grant allowed the districts to examine such things as enrollment, levies and tax rates to determine if it would make financial sense for the districts to join together.

No formal plans have been made to consolidate any of the three districts.

The meeting will be a review of the consolidation study.

The boards will discuss what future action, if any, should be taken.

People in all three school districts have talked informally in the past about consolidating as a way to save money.

The idea of consolidating the Belleville, Monticello and New Glarus districts is not new to the area. The districts already have cooperative arrangements in some sports.
