MONROE - Monroe boys track and cross country coach Dave Hirsbrunner was selected by the Monroe school board Monday to be the high school's next athletic director.

Hirsbrunner said being an athletic director has always been part of his dream. He always wanted to be a teacher, a coach and, eventually, an athletic director.

"I have a huge interest in sports and in athletics in general," Hirsbrunner said.

He has coached summer baseball leagues and sports at both the middle school and high school levels. Hirsbrunner has also been the boys high school track coach for eight years and boys cross country coach for 14 years. For several years he was also the girls high school track coach.

Hirsbrunner has taught special education at the high school since 1992. He will continue to teach while serving the district as the athletic director.

Hirsbrunner said he looks forward to working with the coaches, the teachers and the community.

"I'm a firm believer in communication," he said.

Monroe Superintendent Larry Brown said Hirsbrunner was one of four candidates within the school district to apply for the position. There were 15 people outside of the district who applied for the position, Brown said. The board decided to give priority to the candidates from the Monroe school district. All four candidates were interviewed for the job.

Brown said Hirsbrunner brings a "passion, commitment and organization" to the job.

"Those are always qualities you look for in an athletic director and in a good administrator," Brown said. "He's looking forward to the doing it."

Hirsbrunner will replace Kevin Keen, who will be retiring as athletic director at the end of school year. Keen was athletic director for 14 years. Keen announced his retirement in February.

Hirsbrunner said he will work with Keen over the summer as he transitions into the new position. He will begin his duties at the beginning of the 2010-11 school year, he said.
