MONROE - The Monroe School District is one step closer to naming a new director of curriculum and instruction.

Superintendent Cory Hirsbrunner updated the school board Monday, July 9 on the search. Hirsbrunner said the district interviewed three candidates for the position earlier on Monday.

"We picked three candidates that would be a good fit," Hirsbrunner said.

She said there were 13 applicants and one local candidate applied.

Hirsbrunner declined to name the three candidates interviewed because she said the district is in the process of completing reference checks.

"We indicated to them that we would let them know one way or the other within a week," she said.

"They were all three good candidates to interview," board member Amy Bazley said.

Hirsbrunner agreed with Bazley's assessment.

"It's a good problem to have," she said.

Hirsbrunner took over as superintendent Sunday, July 1 after Larry Brown's resignation became official. Brown left the district to become superintendent of the Rice Lake Area School District.

Hirsbrunner formerly served as curriculum director. Her promotion to superintendent left the position vacant.

In other business, the school board Monday hired Katie Landmark as an English teacher at Monroe Middle School. The board also hired Linda Bushee as a special education instructor at Abraham Lincoln Accelerated Learning Academy and Katherine Oliver as a special education teacher at Parkside Elementary School.

The board also approved the voluntary transfer of Ellie Radke from Abe Lincoln to the middle school as a special education teacher.
