District audit comes out clean

MONROE - An annual audit of the Monroe school district went "very well," according to Carol Knox, a partner at accounting firm Reffue, Pas, Jacobson, Knox and Koster LLP.

The audit covered the fiscal year ending in June.

Knox said the district budgeted for a deficit of $1.7 million for that year, but ended up with a $1.4 million deficit instead, which "shows some restraint in how they spend money."

She also noted that operating on a deficit is becoming more common, as schools are constrained by state budgets.

Through the audit, she found the district has been spending federal and state money as the government requires, with no issues.

"It has gone very well," Knox said. "(The school district) did a good job."
