DARLINGTON - In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation that designated May 15 of each year as Peace Officers Memorial Day.
This year, in recognition of this event, the Darlington Police Department invites all Darlington residents and businesses to display a blue light at their homes and businesses beginning Sunday (National Peace Officers Memorial Day) and lasting until May 21 to help remember the 20,000 law enforcement officers who have died in service to their communities, including those lost in Darlington.
In May 1927, Darlington Police Chief Frank Moran was struck and killed by a car while checking vehicle registration plates on Main Street. In May 1933, Darlington Police Chief William McGinty died of heart attack perhaps caused from excitement when in the performance of duties at the courthouse.
Shining a blue light during this one-week period not only can serve as a reminder of the sacrifices of those lost but also can show support of officers who currently serve in Darlington and all over the nation. This idea is an adaptation of Project Blue Light, which is a project of the Concerns of Police Survivors organization.
