MONROE - Registration is underway for "Dig Into Reading," a summer of programs for all ages at the Monroe Public Library, 925 16th Ave.
Participants may register in person at the library or online at www.monroepubliclibrary.org. While registration has begun, participants may join the library's reading programs at any time during the summer.
The Monroe Public Library will once again offer Early Birds, an early literacy program for babies and toddlers to age 3. Early Birds encourages parents and caregivers to read to their children, share songs and rhymes, and practice the early literacy skills a child needs to master before they can learn to read. By completing four weeks of this program, caregivers may receive four special surprises for their children. An early literacy story program titled "Baby and Toddler Time" will continue through the summer on Mondays at 10 a.m. for this age group.
The Reading Explorers program is for preschool and children entering kindergarten. By reading with an adult each day, Reading Explorers may earn weekly prizes such as books and toys. Children in this age group can participate in the Stories and More, a multi-age story time featuring books and storytelling, songs and rhymes, music, and crafts for preschool hands, held each Thursday morning at 10 a.m.
The reading rewards program for students entering first through fifth grades is called Dig Into Reading. Young readers are encouraged to read for 20 minutes each day, fill in their reading records, and earn prize coupons. They may trade their coupons for their choice of prizes, including books, T-shirts and creative toys.
Wild Wednesday events include special presentations and hands-on workshops. A full schedule of Wild Wednesday events is available at the Monroe Public Library.
Children ages 3 to 10, or entering fifth grade, may attend the first of the Wild Wednesday events, "Miss Frizzle - Live at the Library." Miss Frizzle of Magic School Bus will bring science surprises to the audience on Wednesday, June 12. Seating is limited and tickets are required. Free tickets may be picked up in the lobby of the library the hour before the 1:30 p.m. or 3 p.m. performances.
Two sessions of the first Wild Wednesday Workshop, "Seed It, Feed It, Eat It," will be held at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 19. Young would-be gardeners will be checking out some plant science, planting a hairy friend, and taste test some interesting fruits and vegetables. Tickets are required for this program and may be picked up in the lobby of the library the hour before either workshop.
The teen Summer Library Program for 2013 is called Beneath the Surface. Students entering sixth through ninth grade will be reading for fun, submitting brief book reviews, and earning prizes as well as tickets to the end-of-summer Cave Party. Weekly activities will be available in the 4-TEENS corner of the library.
New to the Monroe Public Library this year is the Lunch Bunch Read Aloud for students entering fourth through seventh grades. Participants may bring a brown bag or fast food lunch each Thursday at 12:45 p.m. during the months of June and July.
Laurie Solawetz, teen services specialist, will lead the Lunch Bunch Read Aloud, reading from a selection of books for this age group. No registration is required for the Lunch Bunch Read Aloud program and students are encouraged to bring a friend.
Groundbreaking Reads, the summer reading program for adults and high school students entering grades 10 through 12 offers a variety of weekly prizes to participants who review and rate their favorite summer reads.
