Depositing debris in street is against rules

MONROE - The City of Monroe Storm Water Utility and Street Department is reminding residents of the city ordinance against depositing refuse or debris, including grass clippings, leaves, dirt, and tree limbs, in the street.

When it rains, the debris is washed into the storm inlets, causing back-ups or running into streams. The fall leaf collection is the only time leaves are permitted to be placed in the gutter.

Grass should be placed in a clear bag with a yard waste sticker attached. Bags will be picked up on the regular refuse collection day or they can be brought it to the street department for free yard waste drop-off during designated times.

Monroe residents can drop off yard waste at the street department from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesdays and 7 a.m. to noon Saturdays. Open Wednesday days are: April 8 and 29, May 6 and 27, June 3 and 234, July 1 and 22, Aug. 5 and 26, Sept. 9 and 30, and Oct. 7 and 28. Open Saturday days are: April 18, May 16, June 13, July 11, Aug. 15, Sept. 19 and Oct. 17.
