DARLINGTON - The Darlington Fire Department was awarded a $631,275 grant Tuesday from the Federal Emergency Management Agency that will benefit all of Lafayette County.

Darlington Mayor Dave Breunig said the grant was written by the Darlington Fire Department on behalf of the county-wide emergency services. Breunig said the money will be used to help update radios for all services over the next couple of years. The updates will allow the county's emergency services to work more closely together, he added.

"This is really good for us," Breunig said. "This is what the money was intended for."

In announcing the grant, Rep. Ron Kind, D-La Crosse, said the money would help local fire departments protect the health and well-being of people in western Wisconsin, in press release.

Darlington Fire Chief Tim Hastert said the money will help the community.

"This is a great boost and will help with the emergency efforts in Lafayette County," he said.

Darlington was one of 17 fire departments in western Wisconsin to receive grant money.

Since 2001, the federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant program has awarded more than $4 billion in grants to first responders to help purchase emergency response equipment, personal protective equipment, firefighting and emergency vehicles and training, according to the press release from Kind's office.
