MONROE - Rep. Brett Davis, R-Oregon, will seek a third term.

Davis, who first was elected to the Assemb-ly in 2004, said he's running for a third term because he still wants to do all he can for the residents of the 80th Assembly district, and he's still excited about his work in Madison.

"I'm more motivated to work hard for the people of the 80th District," Davis said.

Davis said growing the economy, lowering health care costs, strengthening education and controlling government spending are issues the Legislature and the state must grapple with in the next two years. He said he wants to do all he can to make a difference.

There is a sense of pessimism due to higher gasoline costs, food costs and reports of how the economy will affect local municipalities, Davis said.

"Costs are going up and wages aren't," he said.

There are things state government can do to help, he added.

The state's role is to help companies invest in the economy and help retrain people to acquire skills for new jobs.

The state also can help attract new businesses and new technology.

"Family budgets, business budgets and state budgets are getting tight," Davis said, but there still needs to be a can-do attitude.

A lot can be accomplished if people work hard and stick together, he said.

Thus far, Davis is the only Republican candidate for the Assembly. Two Democrats, Kris Wisnefske and John Waelti, both of Monroe, have announced their candidacies.

Party primaries are Sept. 9 and the general election is Nov. 4.
