DARLINGTON — Over the next three weeks, construction on Main Street in Darlington will kick into full gear. Lanes will be narrower, traffic flow will be shifted to one side of Main Street only, flaggers will be present, and traffic lights will eventually be installed on the bridge. It’s safe to say one should expect delays.
The Darlington Police Department wishes to inform area motorists that traffic violations in the construction zone will not be tolerated. It is very important to the department that the men and women working in the construction zone this year stay safe. Therefore, officers are offering the following tips:
● Reduce speed
● Leave earlier so to not be in a rush
● Put cell phones down
● Pay special attention
● Obey all construction signs and flaggers
Officers point out that fines double in construction zones. For example, simply operating 5 mph over the posted speed limit will cost you $263.50. Anyone who injures a construction worker can be imprisoned for up to 3.5 years. So, for everyone’s sake, officers want motorists to be especially careful in the construction zone this year.
