DARLINGTON - The City of Darlington Police Department announced the Darlington Municipal Building Senior Center is open and will remain open as a cooling center through the current heat advisory until Friday, July 19.

The Senior Center will act as a cooling center for those who do not have air conditioning and need a place to get away from the sun and heat of the day. Hours of operation for the cooling center will be 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The National Weather Service has placed Darlington and all of Lafayette County under a heat advisory until 7 p.m. Friday.

The National Weather Service reminds people that prolonged nature of the heat wave may cause an increase in heat-related illnesses as the week progresses. The heat can be most stressful on small children, the elderly or those with medical conditions. Leaving a child or a pet in an enclosed vehicle, even for a short time, can be deadly.

People are urged to take extra precautions if they work or spend time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water.
