DARLINGTON - In anticipation of the winter season, Darlington Police Chief Jason King released a statement in which he said the department wishes to remind city residents and visitors of parking restrictions that went into effect Nov. 1.
The city's alternate side street parking ordinance now requires those who park on the street to alternate from one side to the other each day. Vehicles must be parked on the odd-numbered side of the streets on odd dates and on the even-numbered side of the streets on even dates.
The ordinance will be enforced every morning between the hours of midnight and 6 a.m. Residents should remember the date to keep in mind would be the one after midnight, not necessarily when they park their cars for the evening, King wrote.
A first offense results in a $10 parking ticket. For each following violation, the ticket will be $20.
Officers issue warnings until the first snowfall to help residents adjust once more to the alternate parking routine. However, regardless of existing weather conditions, the ordinance will be strictly enforced. Even on nice days the street crews may be working to widen streets or engaging in other snow removal efforts, King noted.
The department encourages everyone with off-street parking to ensure it is used to accommodate for snow removal equipment.
