DARLINGTON - A rural Darlington man was killed when the motorcycle he was operating crashed late Saturday near Darlington.
Wayne P. Gollmer, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene. The accident occurred at County Z and Deery Road, about 5 miles northwest of Darlington, at 11:30 p.m.
Lafayette County sheriff officials said Gollmer was driving a 2002 Harley Davidson east on County Z when he lost control at a curve in the road. The motorcycle left the road and struck a fence. Gollmer was thrown from the motorcycle.
The motorcycle was heavily damaged. Gollmer was not wearing a helmet.
Rural Medical Ambulance Service and the Darlington Fire Department were called to help at the scene.
The accident is Lafayette County's first traffic fatality of 2010.
