DARLINGTON — A Darlington man faces a 5th OWI charge, this time while allegedly driving with a passenger under 16.

On Jan. 31, at about 6:45 PM, deputies responded to the W5600 block of CTH C, in the Town of Washington, to a “check the welfare request on a motorist,” according to a statement from the Green County Sheriff’s Office.

“The investigation resulted in Charles D. Breunig, 47, of Darlington, being placed under arrest for Operating While under the Influence (5th offense with a passenger under 16),” said the statement.

Breunig remained in Green County Jail pending court. He pleaded guilty to his fourth OWI in 2019 in Lafayette County, according to court records. He was sentenced to three years’ probation at that time and nine months in jail with Huber privileges.

A 5th OWI offense in Wisconsin is considered a Class G felony, with potential penalties including a jail sentence ranging from 6 months to 10 years, a 2 to 3 year driver’s license revocation, a mandatory ignition interlock device, significant fines, and mandatory alcohol assessment and treatment programs.
