DARLINGTON - A Darlington man was charged with vehicular homicide Thursday after he caused the death of another Darlington man last weekend.
Mateo Fuentes Flores, 22, faces charges of homicide by use of a vehicle with a prohibited alcohol concentration and homicide by use of a vehicle while using a controlled substance - both Class C felonies - and a Class H felony count of knowingly operating with a revoked license causing death. He also faces a misdemeanor count of second-offense driving while intoxicated.
Flores was charged after he caused the death of Patricio Soto-Alarcon, 35, in a one-vehicle rollover crash in the 26000 block of Wisconsin 11, Town of New Diggings, on June 17.
According to a Lafayette County Sheriff's news release, Flores' vehicle struck a guardrail before crossing the road and striking an embankment, where the vehicle rolled before coming to rest on its roof.
Soto-Alarcon, a passenger in Flores' vehicle, was pronounced dead.
Another passenger, Hiliberto Fuentes Cervantes, 22, also of Darlington, sustained minor injuries, as did Flores.
A $10,000 cash bond was set Thursday with conditions that Flores not possess or consume any alcoholic beverages or any controlled substances without a prescription, nor enter any establishment whose purpose is the sale of alcohol. Flores has not yet posted the bond.
Flores' preliminary hearing is scheduled for July 5. His maximum possible sentence is 53 years in prison.
