DARLINGTON - A Darlington man was charged Monday with domestic assault after a disturbance was reported at a Darlington residence on Feb. 8.
Hector Manuel Contreras-Ruiz, 31, faces a Class H felony count of aggravated battery and a Class H felony count of strangulation, as well as a misdemeanor count of disorderly conduct.
According to a police report, Contreras-Ruiz attacked a woman after the woman asked that he turn off the music he was listening to. Contreras-Ruiz, who was reportedly intoxicated at the time, responded first by urinating on some of the woman's laundry, and then by attempting to have sex with her.
When the woman refused Contreras-Ruiz's advances, he dragged her from her bed by her hair, slammed her head into a wall, threw her to the ground and began to strangle her, repeatedly pounding her head against the floor while he did so.
Contreras-Ruiz eventually stopped his assault, and the woman fled the residence.
The woman told police that Contreras-Ruiz had been abusive frequently in the past and had often threatened to kill her. She said she was afraid of Contreras-Ruiz and what he might do to her.
Contreras-Ruiz's initial court appearance is scheduled for March 17. The maximum possible sentence for his charges is six years in prison.
