DARLINGTON - A 33-year-old Darlington father of two was killed when he crashed his SUV about three miles north of the city early Friday, Sept. 13.
Jay J. Schwartz was southbound on County F near Furnace Hill Road in Willow Springs Township when he lost control of his 2011 Chevy SUV and went off the right-hand side of the road, according to Chief Deputy John Reichling of the Lafayette County Sheriff's Department.
Schwartz then swerved onto the road again before veering back toward the right-hand ditch. The SUV rolled at least once before coming to rest on its wheels.
A 911 caller at 12:38 a.m. reported the crash.
Schwartz was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Lafayette County Coroner Virginia Douglas. His SUV sustained moderate damage.
Deputies were assisted at the scene by Rural Medical Ambulance, the Darlington Fire Department and Darlington police.
Reichling did not specify contributing factors in the crash.
This is Lafayette County's third traffic fatality of 2013, he said.
Schwartz is survived by his wife, Amy, and their daughters Jaylyn and Amya. A 1999 graduate of Darlington High School, he most recently worked at BARD Materials in Darlington and was a member of the Darlington Fire Department.
His funeral is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 19, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Darlington. For more information, see Schwartz's death notice on page A2.
