Dan Wegmueller: Time to take another ride

Folks, it is only June, but 2009 already is a good year. The last few months have been especially gracious, and thus, it is about time that motorcycle riding compatriot Stewbert and I set off on our annual cross-continental bike trip.

What started as a simple joke over beers has become a carefully planned and executed yearly tradition. In January 2007, I turned to my friend and joked, "Wouldn't it be cool to ride our bikes to Vancouver?" Instead of inciting laughter, the comment made us ponder. In 2007 Scott "Stewbert" Stewart and I set off on our 2006 Yamaha R1 supersports, westbound for Vancouver, Canada. In 2008 we headed south. We followed the Mississippi River all the way to New Orleans before turning east and running the Gulf of Mexico to Panama City Beach, Fla.

My friends, you are more than welcome to join Stewbert and me as we faithfully execute the carefully planned motorcycle trip for this year! Check out this brilliant itinerary: Come Wednesday morning, Stewbert and I again will hit the road on our impervious 2006 Yamaha R1 supersports. We will head north into Canada, via Sault Ste. Marie, and turn east. We will continue east to the St. Lawrence Seaway, circle back along the Gulf of St. Lawrence in New Brunswick, and drop south to the United States, into Maine. After a ride along Maine's spectacular Atlantic coastline, we will change gears by spending a few days with a friend in Midtown Manhattan, New York City.

Finally, Stewbert and I will conclude our 12-day journey by riding west through the Appalachians in Pennsylvania, continuing along the Great Lakes all the way home, to Wisconsin (naturally avoiding Gary, Indiana).

During our stops, I'll be sending back stories to be published in the Times. As I always say, you are more than welcome to join us!
