NEW GLARUS - Lauren Ann Christen, Belleville, is Green County's Dairy Queen for 2010-11.
She was crowned Saturday at the New Glarus Chamber/Depot, on Railroad Street, following the parade as part of Green County Dairy Days, sponsored by the Green County Ag Chest.
She succeeds Morgan Behnke, New Glarus, who presented Christen with the crown.
"Morgan, you inspire me so much," Christen said after the crowning. "I have such big shoes to fill."
Christen said she has enjoyed meeting and talking to many people as Belleville's Dairy Queen. As the county's Dairy Queen, she will have many more opportunities to continue that duty.
As outgoing queen, Behnke said she has enjoyed all the festivals she has attended in the past year, especially in her hometown of New Glarus.
Belleville did not have a runner-up to replace Christen, so she will continue to fulfill that community's Dairy Queen responsibilities in the coming year. Christen is the daughter of Jay and Candee Christen.
The Green County Dairy Princess, which was also announced Saturday, will accompany the Dairy Queen at many events throughout the year as the official hostesses for the Green County Ag Chest.
Katie Burke, daughter of Mark and Pam Burke, New Glarus, was crowned as Dairy Princess for 2010-11.
Rachel Gilson now becomes New Glarus' Dairy Queen.
Burke is the fifth New Glarus Dairy Queen to have gone on to become Green County Dairy Princess. She succeeds Tamiya Sandlin of Albany.
Eleven Green County communities participate in the Ag Chest Dairy Queen program. The Green County Community Dairy Queens are hostesses in their communities.
Prior to the queen crowning, the streets of New Glarus were lined with people at noon Saturday for the Green County Dairy Days parade.
The parade, with about 50 entries, included Dairy Queens from all the Green County communities, past Dairy Queens, dairy cattle, Leonard and Lydia Gilson, who are Green County's oldest active farm couple, and Green County's Cheese Days Ambassador Trisha Pernot.
New Glarus' High School Ensemble and Jodel Klub with Swiss Alphorns provided music for the festival parade. The New Glarus Fire Department performed its historical ladder climbing re-enactment.
Judges awarded several floats in different classes after the parade.
The judges chose the New Glarus FFA entry for first place in the FFA/4-H category. Brown Swiss cows with authentic Swiss cow bells took home first prize in the Swiss category, and the Brodhead Historical Society took first place in non-commercial category. Also, DRZ Enterprises came away with first place in the commercial category.
