DARLINGTON — An area motorcyclist remained hospitalized Monday, after a late-morning collision with a deer near South Wayne in Lafayette County — one of several weekend accidents around the region.
The motorcycle vs. deer crash happened in the 10000 block of County N, in Wiota Township, according a report from the sheriff’s office.
Danny G. Burkhalter was riding his 1988 Harley-Davidson just before 11 a.m. when the crash occurred, ejecting him from the bike. The rider and bike came to rest in the road. His injuries were characterized as serious; and he was flown by UW Medflight helicopter for emergency treatment.
“He popped over a hill and hit the deer,” sheriff Reg Gill said on Monday. “He was not far from where he lived.”
Burkhalter was not wearing a helmet, according to the sheriff. Gill said he had not received any updates on Burkhalter’s condition.
Woodford Fire and First Response, Argyle Fire and Argyle EMS were on scene — with assistance from Lafayette County EMS, reports said.
Later on Saturday, at about 8:20 p.m., Monroe Police were called to the intersection of 21st Street and Wis. 69 for a report of a hit-and-run crash with no injuries.
“The investigation indicated that a vehicle operated by Natasha L. Smith (37), of Monroe, was stopped at the eastbound stop lights on 21st Street, and was rear-ended by a second vehicle, which then left the scene without stopping,” a police statement said. “Officers were able to locate the second vehicle at a residence in the 1300 block of 17th Avenue and identified the driver during the accident as Jerry Bolivar (55), of Monroe.”
Bolivar was arrested and charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated-first offense. He was also cited for hit-and-run to an attended vehicle; and failure to notify police of an accident.
Also Saturday, Monroe police released details of another crash at 10th Street and 5th Avenue at about 11:44 a.m. Trenten N. Ryan, 26, New Glarus, was stopped at the stop sign westbound on 10th Street, entered the intersection with 5th Avenue and collided with a vehicle operated by Deborah L. Brooks, 72, Monroe. Brooks had been northbound on 5th Avenue.
Both vehicles sustained functional damages and were driven from the scene. Ryan was cited for failure to yield the right of way from a stop sign.
Less than 24 hours earlier, at about 2 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 26, police, fire and paramedic personnel responded to a two-vehicle crash at 20th Street and 8th Avenue, a block south of Horseshoe Saloon. No further information was provided by press time.
