Crash claims life of 27-year-old man

DARLINGTON - Lafayette County had its first fatal motor vehicle accident of 2021 in the evening hours of Sunday, April 25. At 7:57 p.m., the Lafayette County Sheriff's Office Dispatch Center received a 911 call reporting a single motor vehicle rollover crash with injury on County F, just south of the intersection with Gravel Run Road, Town of Fayette.

Lafayette County Sheriff's Deputies, Darlington Fire and Green County EMS, Darlington, were immediately dispatched.

The investigation of the crashed revealed that Lucas R. Hicks, 27 of Darlington, was traveling southbound on County F in a 2007 Chevrolet Equinox when he failed to negotiate a curve, lost control of the vehicle, left the roadway and overturned numerous times. Hicks, the lone occupant in the vehicle, was ejected.

Hicks was declared dead at the scene as a result of his injuries, according to the Lafayette County Coroner's Office. Speed, alcohol and a failure to wear a seatbelt are suspected of contributing to the crash and death. The accident remains under investigation.
