MONROE - The exhibit "www.wayswith-wood.com" is a collection of crafted wood art pieces, as well as a website name by Monticello artist and craftsman, Tony D'Angelo. The exhibit will be on display Friday through April 3 in Frehner Gallery at the Monroe Art Center, 1315 11th St.

D'Angelo was introduced to woodworking by his father while helping him with house projects. The wood pieces D'Angelo produces are intuitive; that is, he does not plan anything out.

His woodworking skills have gone from glueing toothpicks to throwing clay at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, to building his house to making furniture. He refers to his current pieces as "wood mosaics, wood collages and wood paintings," which incorporate this technique into mirrors, jewelry boxes, tables and other familiar objects.

The colors and patterns in his pieces are in their natural state, and he does not use stains or dyes to enhance the wood. Standard woodworking tools, including saws of many types, chisels, sanders and planers, are used when producing projects. Hard straight lines, sharp edges, perfect circles and geometric designs give the pieces a structured look with an industrial, mechanical and contemporary feel.

An opening reception is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday in Frehner Gallery. A brief artist gallery talk begins at 5:30 p.m. The free event is open to the public.

The exhibit has been made possible by MAC Corporate Underwriter: Colony Brands Inc., and Season Media Underwriters Monroe Publishing, LLC and Big Radio, with additional support from Michael and Shelley Muranyi; Paul and Sue Barrett; and Lee and Chris Knuteson.
