County to request funds for tornado cleanup

MONROE - A State of Emergency proclamation in Green County will allow county officials to request funds from federal entities to help handle the cost of damages caused by tornadoes that struck June 16 and June 17.

Green County Emergency Management Director Tanna McKeon said the proclamation, approved unanimously Tuesday by the Green County Board, allows her to begin the process of looking for cleanup funds, and that the Federal Emergency Management Agency is the most likely to provide those funds.

McKeon said that overall, the storm caused about $800,000 in damages around the county, the most significant occurring around Brodhead and York Township. Meteorologists believe the two tornadoes went through northwestern Green County starting near Blanchardville, then lifting up and dropping again in Verona.

McKeon said that although she received reports from across the county concerning damaged buildings, barns and vehicles, there is likely a lot of damage that went unreported. McKeon said there were eight barns completely destroyed, nine barns severely damaged, four silos destroyed, 12 outbuildings damaged, four cars and one truck damaged, as well as miles of fences and numerous broken branches and trees torn apart by the storm.

"I got one report of a piece of two-by-four that went straight through the window of a truck," McKeon said.

She also said that power outages forced dairy farmers to dump three loads of milk. There was about $10,000 in damage to state and county highways.

Gov. Scott Walker declared a State of Emergency for Dane, Grant, Iowa and Green counties less than a week after the storms, but for now, cleanup is being done by townships and citizens in Green County.

"This will bring attention to the state that Green County needs money to facilitate cleanup," McKeon said.
