MONROE - Monroe and Brodhead residents pay the highest tax rates in the county, according to information compiled by the Green County Treasurer's office.

The increase in county taxes due mainly to help pay for Pleasant View Nursing Home.

In October, county residents voted overwhelmingly to allow the county to exceed the revenue limit up to $890,000 a year for the next five years to pay for expected deficits at the nursing home.

Monroe residents will pay $28.52 per $1,000 of assessed property value. The owner of a home valued at $100,000 will pay $2,852. Last year, Monroe residents paid $27.84 per $1,000.

City taxes account for $10.40 of the total bill. That amount is down from $10.43 in 2008, Mayor Ron Marsh said.

"We want to keep our taxes low," he said.

Monroe's portion for county taxes increased from $5.07 in 2008 to $5.55 in 2009.

Brodhead residents will pay $29.67 per $1,000 of assessed property value, which means the owner of a home valued at $100,000 will pay $2,967. That rate includes county taxes.

Brodhead's city portion of the tax bill increased 20 cents from 2008 to 2009, Brodhead City Clerk Nancy Schoeller said.

In 2008, Brodhead's taxes were $12.44 per $1,000 of assessed value. In 2009, the amount was $12.64.

Brodhead's portion for county taxes increased from $5.71 in 2008 to $6.25 in 2009.

New Glarus comes in with the third highest tax rate in the county at $24.09, up from $23.09 in 2008.

New Glarus Village Clerk Lynne Erb said the village's rate increased 36 cents, from $7.99 to $8.52.

City and village tax rates include county taxes, city taxes, school district taxes and Blackhawk Technical College.

Other Green County village tax rates include: Albany, $23.92; Browntown, $22.24 and Monticello, $21.80.

Tax rates for those living in townships generally are less than those for villages and cities because typically fewer municipal services such as streets, sewers and trash collection, are provided. Rates can vary within a township depending on which school district is levying taxes for the property.

For example, residents in Cadiz township who live within the Monroe school district have a tax rate of $20.85, while those in the Black Hawk school district have a tax rate of $22.47.
