MONROE - An inmate at the Green County jail died at about noon Tuesday, after apparently falling ill in his jail cell.

Larry W. Marti, 64, Albany was found sick with unknown symptoms at about 7:15 a.m. Tuesday in his cell by a jailer, according to Randy Roderick, Green County sheriff. Marti was then rushed to Monroe Clinic Hospital, where he died.

Roderick said Marti had a pre-existing health condition but couldn't provide details, citing health privacy laws.

Marti had been jailed since Nov. 10, after a jury found him guilty of first-degree sexual assault of a child, a class B felony. He faced up to 40 years in prison. Marti was scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 28.

His death will be investigated by the Rock County Sheriff's Department because he was an inmate at the jail. Roderick said it's customary to have an outside agency conduct such an investigation.

The last time an inmate died at the jail was in 1996 or 1997, he said.
