MONROE - The 2013 Green County fair, running Wednesday, July 17 through Sunday, July 21 at the Green County fairgrounds in Monroe, promises more action, more thrills and more free shows.

"People want action events," said Sam Kaderly, Green County fair board president. The fair board is foregoing a county singer show this year to make way for more of what people want to see, he added.

The fair is primarily for and about Green County 4-H and FFA youth - and leaders, superintendents and parents want visitors to see the projects, judging, contests and auctions available throughout the fair. But the action really revs up at the grandstand shows and true to tradition, the Green County Fair board is firing up fair week with a free rodeo and ending it with a smashing demolition derby.

The grandstand entertainment lineup starts with the free Three Hills Rodeo at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

"Tractor pulls were drawing good (crowds)," Kaderly said. So, this year, there will be "power and noise on Thursday night and noise and smoke on Friday night," he said. The board lined up two professionally-operated tractor pulling organizations: The Badger State Tractor Pullers for Thursday and the National Tractor Pullers Association for Friday. Each event is $5 in addition to admission to the fairgrounds.

Saturday is filled with more pulling competitions, plus mascots wandering the grounds - all free for adults with admission and totally free for kids under 12 years old who get in the gate before 1:30 p.m. Kids ages 7 and under get free admission all week long.

Antique tractors pull at 8 a.m., and the pedal pushers tractor pull for children ages 3 to 10 years starts at 10 a.m. Also at 10 a.m., Colony Brands sponsors the National Tug of War competition, which takes place on the infield of the race track. This time is a change from the originally published noon start.

Two 4-H and FFA auctions are also on tap Saturday: The fur, fin and feather auction at 10 a.m. and the livestock auction at 12:30 p.m.

Action in the grandstand resumes with the Wisconsin Singers performing at 3:30 p.m. and leading up to the Horse Pull at 4 p.m.

But stick around for the free 7:30 p.m. performance of the Hell Drivers Thrill Show, with stunt drivers recreating famous tricks performed for the silver screens of Hollywood. The fair board had to furnish three working cars for this event. Needless to say, they aren't new.

"They have to go more than 65 miles per hour, and they'll wreck 'em," Kaderly said.

The show includes stunt driver Tonny Petersen, who made famous the stunt of driving on two wheels at the 1964 World's Fair in New York. He's back on stage with a live performance that reveals how shows create car chases, flips, jumps and carefully calculated crashes. Jim "Crash" Moreau gained fame in the 1970s as a flaming, dive-bomber specialist with the Death Riders. His most popular stunt is the Steel Wall, driving through junk cars propped up on their front bumpers like dominoes.

Set for 10:30 a.m. Sunday is the 8th Annual Green County Fair Master Showmanship contest to see the best of the best youth animal handlers in the county.

Then get ready to wade into the bidding wars at 1 p.m. in the Hospitality Tent, now located east of the Youth in Action building, as local businesses and business owners go at it to outbid each other for the best cheeses in Green County in conjunction with the Dairy Youth Recognition Auction.

For one show only, the demolition derby at 4 p.m. rounds out the week's events and promises to be a smashing success to the fair's closing. The derby costs $10 in addition to fair admission.

The Hospitality Tent, new for this year's fair, will offer entertainment all week long and a place for resting and visiting. A visit from Green County Fairest of the Fair Theresa Wyss, local K-9 unit demonstrations, quilt displays and singing acts are all scheduled in the tent.
