MONROE - Bringing home a blue ribbon from the county fair isn't just kid stuff.
Anyone in the community, regardless of age, can exhibit at the Green County Fair in open classes.
"A lot of people, I believe, aren't aware that they can. You don't have to be in 4-H," said Susan Konopacki, Green County Fair Board treasurer.
The fair runs from July 16-20.
There is a large variety of classes that people can choose to enter, she said. Dairy cattle, vegetables, clothing, home furnishings, arts and crafts, photography flowers and wood working are just a few examples.
"There is something for everyone's interest," Konopacki said.
There have been some updates for this year: There is a new scrapbooking class, as well as baking with honey and maple syrup, she said.
Each category has rules for showing. The fair premium book lists details for each category. The books are free and are available at local banks.
The cost for an open class exhibitor ticket is $20. This allows exhibitor entry into the fair each of its five days. The money collected from the exhibitor tickets help to pay out some of the premiums won by exhibitors as well, Konopacki said.
"I don't think county residents realize that the Green County Fair is not government subsidized in any way. We only receive some funding from the state to help with 4-H premiums won. The fair solely relies on donations, entry monies and rent to keep functioning every year," she said.
"If you've always been a 4-Her at heart, please consider entering an exhibit or exhibits and supporting your county fair. It is a lot of fun, you can learn a lot and you never know - you could end up winning a blue ribbon," Konopacki said.
Open class entry forms are due to the fair office by 5 p.m. July 3. Forms are located in the back of premium books.
Exhibits are to be brought to the fairgrounds by 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, and are to remain on exhibit until 7 p.m. Sunday, July 20.
