MONROE — Coming in roughly $50,000 under budget, the Green County Board of Supervisors approved a contract to demolish the former government services building during its meeting Tuesday.
Robinson Brothers Environmental Inc, a specialty contractor company based in Waunakee, was hired for just under the $700,000 budgeted to raze the building. Two other companies, Madison-based Dirty Ducts Cleaning & Environmental Inc with a bid of $1.11 million and Pop Inc with a bid of $1.24 million.
County Clerk Mike Doyle told supervisors during their meeting at the Green County Courthouse that he advised multiple resources on whether Robinson Brothers was a good company. He said he called the Department of Natural Resources and agents informed him they “were a competent company” and research he did reinforced that.
Doyle said the tear-down will be part of a two-step process. First, the asbestos will be removed from the building, then the building will be fully razed. Removal of the asbestos should take from one to two months, Doyle said.
The asbestos will be taken to a special removal facility, wood and other materials have to be removed to an out-of-county landfill and rock materials hauled to a stone quarry on County N. The entire project will take roughly six months, he added.
Another portion of the project will include the renovations of an abandoned boiler room. Doyle said it would have cost roughly $200,000 to raze that building. Instead, it can be reused to store large vehicles. Work will include a new rubber roof, concrete to level the floor and a new 12-by-12-foot door. The estimated cost with two new heating units would be about $45,000, he said, and was already approved by the county Property Committee.
The project was approved by a unanimous voice vote. Supervisors Cal Wickline and John Winters were absent.
