MONROE - Monroe Police are investigating a possible theft of an estimated $3,000 to $4,000 worth of feed corn from a grain bin at the city's firefighter training facility.
Monroe Fire Chief Dan Smits reported the theft to police last week. The police department posted about the theft on its public Facebook page Friday, seeking tips from the public.
"We have no leads from it yet," Monroe Chief of Police Fred Kelley said Tuesday. "Nothing's come in over the weekend."
The grain bin is located at the Monroe Fire Department's MERIT Center, a facility on the north side dedicated to emergency response and industry safety training. Smits was preparing for the spring training season when he discovered the grain bin was empty.
Trainings at the MERIT Center include teaching firefighters how to rescue people who have fallen into grain bins. Kelley said the contents of the onsite grain bin belong to Pleasant Grains LLC of Monroe, not the city. The company fills it annually for the fire department to use for trainings, he said.
Kelley added that about 1,000 bushels of corn are missing, at a current value of $3 to $4 per bushel. Investigators believe the corn was taken some time between September and early December.
"We're hoping it's a mistake" and someone will come forward to say they took it due to a misunderstanding, Kelley said.
In the meantime, Smits said the start of the upcoming training season in April won't be interrupted as a result of the theft.
The Monroe Police Department is asking anyone with information on the corn to call Det. Sgt. Dan Skatrud at 608-329-2418 or via Green County Crime Stoppers at 800-I-C-CRIME (422-7463).
