BRODHEAD — A domestic disturbance this past spring resulted in felony charges for a Brodhead man and his alleged victim, who was also charged in the case.
The incident occurred in March 2023 when the victim, with whom the defendant had a previous relationship, was living in a trailer on his property. He is alleged to have grabbed a gun at one point from the victim, while also preventing her from leaving and choking her.
After an initial confrontation involving the trailer and the gun, the 47-year-old defendant was later trying to leave the property when he allegedly struck a victim with his truck, causing minor injuries.
The pair had been fighting over the defendant’s allegedly seeing another woman and having her on his property on Hartman Road in the Town of Spring Grove.
Additional felony weapons charges were approved for the defendant, David W. Winger, after video evidence of his possessing a gun was shown to police and probation officers. As a felon, Winger could not legally own a firearm after he was convicted by a jury in 2005 of first-degree sexual assault of a child, misdemeanor drug and bail jumping charges.
Records show he was sentenced to prison and did time at Wisconsin’s Jackson Correctional Institution in Black River Falls.
“After (the witness) reported that she was struck with a vehicle and she was also hanging onto a vehicle being driven by David,” said the criminal complaint, “(she) also reported that David had dragged her mother, (Victim 1), from the vehicle. It was reported that (she) was not injured and was declining EMS.”
Winger now faces new charges of possession of a firearm by a felon, felony strangulation and suffocation/domestic abuse/use of a dangerous weapon; and false imprisonment/use of a dangerous weapon.
According to court records, he was released shortly after his arrest on a $5,000 signature bond. Winger is scheduled for a pre-trial conference at 10:30 a.m. on Nov. 21.
The victim, who was not named in the criminal complaint, also was arrested on counts of misdemeanor disorderly conduct and one count of battery after she allegedly waived a fireplace poker around in a threatening manner; and struck Winger in the neck with her fist.
