BRODHEAD - Virginia Vordale (Hartman) Schultz was peacefully released from life on Monday, June 22, 2009 surrounded by family and caring staff at her current home of St. Clare Friedensheim in Monroe after a full and long life.
Virginia was born May 28, 1915 to U. Glenn and Miranda (Vordale) Hartman on the Hartman family farm on Hartman Road in rural Brodhead. She attended a one-room school within walking distance of the farm, but in order to continue on to high school, she had to move ten miles away to live with her grandmother Hattie in Brodhead. She graduated from Brodhead High School in 1932 and then, despite the Great Depression, went on to Whitewater College for a two-year degree in elementary education. Her first teaching job was in Durand, IL where she met her future husband, Del, who was working with the Soil Conservation Service as an civil engineer. They married in 1937 and celebrated 49 years together before Del's death in 1986. During their marriage they raised their five children while living in various locales in Illinois, Wisconsin and California and finally back to her beloved Brodhead. Once again her many cousins and friends became a rich part of her life. She taught for many years in the Brodhead area and retired in 1978. After the children were grown, she and Del enjoyed many trips to Europe and after Del's death she continued to travel with friends. She'd seldom turn down a game of bridge, a good book, the opportunity to quilt with friends or to work in her flower gardens. Her grandchildren were always welcome and she spent many loving hours caring for them. Her church was the backbone of her life and she was involved with many activities in the congregation. She was an enthusiastic volunteer and member of the Brodhead Historical Society. Virginia never overlooked an opportunity to help a neighbor or friend and contributed much to her the Brodhead community.
Virginia is survived by her four daughters, Susan (Ken) Dixon Stokes, Kapaa, HI, Sara Austin, Hemet, CA, Anne Bucalo, McFarland, WI, Laurel (Terry) Tinkle, Coloma, WI, her only son, Fritz (Jean) Schultz and niece, Mary (Hartman) Mainella. She is further survived by her grandchildren, Tim, Tom and Katrina Dixon, Thad and Andrea Matzke, Kirstin Miller, Luke and Miranda Bucalo, Elizabeth Amstutz, Peter Newcomer, Jacob, Sam, Jordan, and Olivia Schultz, 9 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Delbert, her brother, Thomas and her granddaughter, Megan Newcomer in 1997.
Virginia will be buried in a private family burial at State Line Cemetery at the site of her home church. There will be a visitation at the D.L. NEWCOMER FUNERAL HOME, BRODHEAD WI from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Friday, June 26, 2009. A Celebration of her Life will be held at a memorial service at 11 a.m. June 27 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Brodhead with Pastor Larry Froemming officiating. A luncheon will follow at the church. Memorial donations may be made to Bethlehem Lutheran Church or Monroe Clinic Hospice.
The family would like to thank the staff at Friedensheim for the loving care they gave to Virginia over her final five years. We also would like to thank Hospice for their great support in assisting Virginia and her family in the transition into her Everlasting Peace.
