Shannon, Ill. - Virginia L. Artman, age 80 of Shannon, IL passed away Friday, May 12, 2017 at Stephenson Nursing Center in Freeport. She was born at home in rural Stephenson County on October 1, 1936, the daughter of the late Harold and Dorothy (Morgan) Koch. Virginia married Gerald Artman on July 10, 1954 at Bethel United Methodist Church in Shannon. Gerald passed away on January 28, 2014.

After graduating from Shannon High School in 1954, Virginia worked at Economy, Wirtjes Insurance Agency, Lower Insurance Agency, and Artman Insurance Agency. She was a lifelong member of Bethel UMC. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Christian Couple's Sunday class and an election judge. Virginia was an avid Cubs fan and enjoyed old country music. She loved spending time with her family and friends and was always willing to give a helping hand when needed.

Virginia is survived by her daughters, Denise (Jeff) Helmeid of Monroe, WI, and Dawn (Gregg) Walther of Freeport, IL; her sons, Derrick (Corie) Artman of Thomson, IL, and Douglas Artman; her grandchildren, Kylan and Konner Helmeid, Amanda and Austin Walther, Brody Artman, D. Michael Artman, Stacy (Chris) Chavez, David (Heather) Artman, and Eric Artman; great-grandchildren; sister, Vicki (Mike) Henry of Freeport, IL; sister-in-law, Ruth Koch; brother-in-laws, William (Jan) Artman of Freeport, IL, and Roger (Sharon) Artman of Shannon, IL and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Dorothy; her husband, Gerald; her infant son; and her brother, Kenneth Koch.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at Bethel United Methodist Church in Shannon at 10:00 a.m. There will be a visitation on Monday, May 15, 2017 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. also at Bethel UMC. Interment will take place at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Freeport, IL. A memorial fund has been established.
